HISTORY

Spanish settlers briefly passed through the Camp Verde, AZ area in the late 1500s. European settlers arrived in 1865 and began farming along the Verde River. The mining industry created a large migration to the area in the 1870s. Camp Verde is the oldest community in the Verde Valley.

RECREATION

Camp Verde, AZ provides a variety of entertainment like Out of Africa Wildlife Park, Cliff Castle Casino, M Diamond Ranch and Verde Valley Archaeology Center. Fort Verde State Historic Park contains three historic museums, interpretive exhibits and artifacts. Verde Canyon Railroad is a historic route through Arizona’s “other grand canyon.” This four-hour journey is highlighted by one-of-a-kind views and a manmade, 680-foot tunnel. Montezuma Castle National Monument attracts approximately 350,000 visitors each year to this 4,000-square-foot, five-story dwelling. Montezuma Castle is situated 90 feet high within a limestone cliff.


Highlands, wilderness areas and trails leading to some of the finest vistas in Arizona surround Camp Verde, AZ. Nearby state parks are Dead Horse Ranch, Red Rock, Rocking River and Verde River Greenway. Coconino National Forest is one of the most diverse national forests in the country, while Prescott National Forest is comprised of approximately 1.25 million acres.

Visitors and residents may also enjoy annual celebrations like Spring Heritage Pecan and Wine Festival, Summer Archaeology Film Festival, Cornfest and Fort Verde Days.

CLIMATE

The Verde Valley lies between the Sonoran Desert and the Colorado Plateau. At an elevation of 3,100 feet, Camp Verde, AZ features some of the mildest weather in the country. Precipitation includes 18 inches of rain each year and there is 268 days of sunshine annually.
